Alexa gives statistics on websites but I don't know how they are getting their data since I put no code on my site for Alexa - anybody know how they get their numbers?
Thanks.

They mostly use toolbar data--people who have the Alexa toolbar installed. The data is not very accurate, and I've heard from others that the data is easily manipulated.

Exactly what BH said.
Alexa only culls data from it's userbase.
If all Alexa users went only to one website, it would be # 1 in their rankings. Since they ar elimited in scope to only their user base for data, niche focused sites are often much lower in the rankings than is realistic.
Do not hang your hat on Alexa numbers.
It's kind of like saying AOL is the real Internet...Alexa does not show you everything.

I have noticed, when I have my Alexa tool bar active and do a lot of checking on my own website, I am gaining enormous Alexa ratings immediately. Only one person can trick Alexa willingly or unwillingly, especially if they can change IP address when switching off a DSL connection.

Easily manipulated. You don't need their toolbar, or to worry about their statistics.
