I'm trying to put together a basic list of no brainer items to think about when beginning to optimize a website. I have been working at a SEM firm for a few years now and am in charge of "training." Well, my training was kind of trial by fire and I would like to make it a little bit easier for any new folks we happen to hire.

So far in order of importance I have the following topics:

    1. Content, we need at least 200+ words of content in order to create a keyword rich yet reader/user friendly feel.
    2. Meta data, just the basics there Title, Description, Keyword even though it doesn't really count for much anymore. Are Robots really even worth including here? I mean I've never touched them as I figure most pages should be read by the spiders, when is it appropriate to worry about these?
    3. Linking - other than directories and smaller SE's what other options are there? In our specific industry, hospitality in particular hotels/lodging, I find that link baiting isn't really an option. I have a few hotels that will use blogs but generally most clients won't host them on their server so I don't feel like that is really worth the time.
    4. Image optimization via alt tags, names etc
    5. Submitting site to Google Webmaster tools/sitemaps

What else is there for a basic optimization process for a website? I feel like I am missing something huge but I can't figure out what it would be. Short of a site redesign and 301's. It just seems like such a short list when I think about the hours that get put in for each client lol. Also this is strictly optimization as our Pay Per Click is a different division.

Thanks! Any ideas or suggestions would be helpful.

i created an SEO skeleton for the others to use as a template so that they know where and in what format the different items that are of importance to SEO go on a page and site.

you may also want to include basic server set up items on your list (directory structure, htaccess, php directives, robots.txt, etc)
