Kinderstart sues Google over lower page ranking
Reuters Sat Mar 18, 2006 9:08 PM ET
SAN FRANCISCO, March 18 (Reuters) - A parental advice Internet site has sued Google Inc., charging it unfairly deprived the company of customers by downgrading its search-result ranking without reason or warning.

The civil lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in San Jose, California, on Friday by KinderStart.com seeks financial damages along with information on how Google ranks Internet sites when users conduct a Web-based search...

...The complaint accuses Google, as the dominant provider of Web searches, of violating KinderStart's constitutional right to free speech by blocking search engine results showing Web site content and other communications.

KinderStart contends that once a company has been penalized, it is difficult to contact Google to regain good standing and impossible to get a report on whether or why the search leader took such action.

The suit was filed the same day a federal judge denied a U.S. government request that Google be ordered to hand over a sample of keywords customers use to search the Internet while requiring the company to produce some Web addresses indexed in its system.

Technically, I don't see anything obvious in their source code. Their 44k+ links do look spammy.

Legally, I can't see the Courts holding Google accountable based on the First Amendment.

And if the Department of Justice can't get a judge to order Google to turn over confidential material, Kinderstart has no chance of getting proprietary encoding.

Are they serious? I mean really - suing Google because they droppe din the rankings?

Did they miss the fact that "it's google's toy to play with" and that search results are provided as a service, not a right?

I don't think this company have a hope against Google, as Google provide regular SERP listings for free.

It's a bit like sueing Microsoft because I can't get my head around one of there products and asking them to change it just for me :s lol

This really shouldn't get very far, but Kinderstart is going to get a boost in it's SERP's anyway with all these links to news articles and to it's website.

Best form of advertising, do something stupid and outrageous lol

The cow says to the barman, "Got milk?"

The trout asks for a pitcher of ale to swim in...

...and the seagull heads straight for the garbage out back.

The seagull is nesting on the cows head between the horns. The cow says "Hi I'm Cliff".

Brilliant idea. The law firm may have cost them $10k, but now the links and word of mouth are invaluable.

hey Hampstead and SportsGuy, maybe you two should start a 'stand up' thread laugh

With Kinderstart, if they loose this case, they'll go up thanks to all the links, if they win I think G will have to place them higher(ish)

    It's win-win taking G to court... huh

    lol
