Hi. I've recently started an online design agency, coming from a web design and development background. That part of my business is going very well, and one of our clients is asking us to implement an SEM program for them. I'm familiar at a high level with SEM, but haven't managed programs. I know there's lots to learn, but my first questions are these:

1) Do you more experienced SEM professionals make your clients pay for their PPC campaigns (AdWords, etc.) with their own credit cards? Or do you pay for them, then bill your clients with a markup?
2) Do you more experienced SEM professionals setup hour clients SEM campaigns in your own Google Analytics account or do you set that up via clients' SEM campaigns?

I have different ideas about how to package this from a business perspective, but I'm looking for a little guidance from some of you who have already been through some wars and been smart enough to figure it out.

A little help, please? Thanks alot. Much appreciated.

A couple things I see with each strategy on credit cards:

If you use your own card and then bill clients, I would make sure that I had a legal recourse if the client, for whatever reason, welches on payment. I can see bad times ahead if a business folds, changes ownership, etc., and you've advanced them X number of dollars. Makes me think keeping your card out of it is the way to go.

That said, there may be headaches down the road if you don't have easy access to the card information. Besides the normal lapses that could accompany an expiring card, campaigns could be shut down if the card is flagged with suspicious activity.

For example, I had a PPC campaign go inactive for about 18 hours at the beginning of this month because several members of the company were out-of-state at a conference. The card was suspended just as the prepaid funds ran out, and while it was quickly resolved, it was not something I would like to repeat anytime soon. I had to get a new corporate card number, making sure to get the expiration date, security code from the back, billing address, etc.
