I am curious there are so many companies out there who will register a domain name. Who are they actually registering this name with and who is getting paid for this? I mean when you pay a company to register a domain is there someone else they pay? Who is that person and can I go direct to them and not pay anything to register my domain name? This concept just confuses me I mean you can get a patent for free shouldn't I be able to get a free domain name with no strings attached? sad

Domain names are registered in .com or .biz or .whatever servers. These servers hold the location of the adress of their respective domains. It's like a phone book. If you want to be listed some one has to have your location. The price varies for that link depending on who you pay for the listing. First there was only one company then there are many so the price for the same service varies. You can get a free domanin name but it will be part of someone elses domain name not just yours. I dont know of any that are free but I would like to. hth

There is an International body (I think its named ICANN) which maintains the Domain space. They "decide" what top level domains will be available (COM, NET, ORG etc.) and also decide what top level domains each country will have (US, UK, AU, etc.). ICANN has administrative costs that must be paid for - such as DNS and WHOIS services.
