I have a merchant account but the cost of a gateway is just too much for me.
I am selling online subscription (newsletter) and a big ticket item, I know that many people just as well call me on the phone for the big ticket than whip out the cc. I have used paypal and 1shoppingcart both I am trying to get away from.
I am looking at www.2checkout.com and clickbank for my newsletter.
what decent options can I use for a pseudo gateway? (other than paypal)

2CO receives a wholesale rate discount of 5.5% plus $0.45 off the retail price of each total order.

if you already have a merchant account, they should be setup to use authorizenet as a gateway as most merchant account providers who deal with e-commerce are. If not, go to their site and sign up. You shouldn't be paying more than 1.9%-2.4% for your discount rate.

iKobo is also a good paypal alternative. It gave me the advantage of mobility by using their iKard (Visa electron debit card) which I use to withdraw my funds. Their setup fee is free and if you like their merchant fee (2.9% +0.29$) you might want to take a look at their website. Also, take a look at their affiliate program.
About 2cO, I can only say that I've been there and I decided to look for other payment system. There are some interesting reviews about 2CO here: [link]

I use propay.com and have an online check module and credit card module on my own secure server. [hope I'm terming this right]. The info goes into a db and sends me an email. then i go and retrieve and enter. Fetch! fetch! its a ROYAL PITA, but propay.com is cheaper than costco when you can't afford a gateway and all that.
i wish some of we wee-ones could get our own gateway, banding together.

If you're going to process more than $1k per month, you're better off getting your own merchant account an payment gateway. There are several merchant accounts that will give you free setup of authorize.net, with practically nothing down.

I pay about $30 total per month in fees, and 2.25% + .25 per. That's cheaper than jsut about any other processor I've ever seen other than paypal.

Have you done the math? Is your flat rate cheaper than a real merchant?

PlugNpay, or PaymeNow are decent gateways too. The integrate with most shopping carts.

Though Propay doesn't offer a cart, and all the free carts out there don't allow real-time processing with them, there is propaycart.com for something like $12/yr that works my Propay acct. I use it to give me buy now buttons like paypal has.

I recently started usin Authorizenet as a gateway after having paypal for a while - I shopped around and found that a lot of merchant service providers were charging from $99.00 to $199.00 for the setup - Finally found a FREE one with no setup fee and very reasonable merchant accout fees at www.merchantequipment.ws

Located in Samoa. I would rather pay $99 for a local company.
