Hey,
I was wondering what the best ways to market a travel site are. I have been trying Google Adwords and Overture without much success - the advertising ends up costing more than what I'm getting for every hotel/ticket/cruise sold. Are there any cheap ways of targetting customers?

please put your url in the profile so that people can see.
Anyways, it can be due to :
1. Lower Conversion Rate
2. Improper Keyword Selection
3. Combined Effect of both 1 and 2
If you are getting low conversions from PPC engines then I guess you should work on improving the website because no matter what you do to get traffic and sales, the poor conversion rate will deceleration the growth potential.
There are plenty of cheap methods around but as it is said : first things first

You're probably bidding on only the keywords with the highest competition. I've been able to generate a lot of less expensive traffic using creative keyword phrases for two different wholesale airline ticket brokers.
There are forums for both Google Adwords and Overture here where you can get more suggestions and read past information on what works and what doesn't.
