I saw a reference to SEMPO on a recent post. I checked out their website. Two Questions: 1) What kind of an individual is SEMPO good for and who is not good for?. 2) In what situations are their courses worth the money?

I've yet to meet a course that gives more than regular membership of a good forum.
Things change, and a forum allows new info to be discussed by scores of people - on a course, you have to trust a handful of people.
I've no view of the organisation ... I follow Groucho's policy "I won't join any club that'll have me as a member"

Up front, I'm a member of SEMPO, I co-chair the In-House Committee and I sit on the Board of Directors.
The intro course is ideally suited for those new to SEO activities. The advanced course would be the logical follow-on, but given the higher price, it's not targeted at casual folks, but those in this space as a career.
SEMPO also offers dedicated training for those focused on the paid search side of things as well.
The bottom line is this:
The courses offer a way to learn more, faster, than forums (that's true of any good course, really).
So beyond the training SEMPO offers, we do a LOT of industry research - I personally run the In-House & Agency Salary Surveys. We have other, bigger and smaller surveys, as well - all of which are freely accessible to members.
Naturally, I'm biased on the benefits, but the single biggest benefit I can say is available to everyone, is the ability to network if you get involved. Volunteering an hour or so a month to help a committee opens a lot of doors and allows you to access some great folks in the industry.
If you do not work in the industry, then many of these points may be moot.

Has anyone else had personal experience with SEMPO membership or courses they could share?
