I'm looking for mp3 sites that sell legal by USA standards.

    WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR:

    • NO monthly fees
    • Charges $0.50 or less per song (preferrably)
    • Offers different mp3 bit rates (preferrably)
    • Mp3 formats should work on any mp3 player and should be portable to play on whatever device I want to play them on (computer, my mp3 player, or via my car stereo's USB port with flash drive. I do not want to be restricted to mp3's that only work on apple's ipod.
    • Should be able to make back-up copies in the event the main copy goes corrupt or my puter's drive gets corrupt.
    • Must not require any special software to download and play music—should play via any mp3 software or player.
    • No strings attached like “minimum number of songs to buy” or some “sign-up fee.”

All I'm finding are these sites with monthly signup fees—I hate those kinds of sites.

I was sure someone here would know of an mp3 music source... Anyone??

Even if the price per mp3 was $0.70 or $0.80, I'd like to know about it (though IMO, that's kinda high too).

Sorry Curt. I'm a Napster guy from way back. These days I use iTunes...

iTunes seems restrictive because they require a person to use the iTunes software and iPod—way too restrictive. Just want plain old mp3's and no monthly fees (just charge per mp3 downloaded).

Never used napster. I'm looking for a service like "AllofMP3.com" and "MP3Sparks.com" and the downloads are USA legal.

"AllofMP3.com" was one of the largest services for providing mp3's cheap and in the format you wanted for great prices. The downside was that the site was recently deemed not legally authorized to sell music according to various recording companies even though the site collected royalties for artists (don't quite understand the technical legal details behind that). The WTO (World Trade Organization) said that Russia could not become a member of WTO until Russia shut down "AllofMP3.com", a site owned by a Russian Online Music Store. Because of that, Russia shut down that site for consideration of becoming a member.

"MP3Sparks.com" looks like a clone site of "AllofMP3.com". It too could end up like "AllofMP3.com" if they haven't gotten legal authorization from the recording companies to sell mp3's.

I'm looking for a version of "AllofMP3.com" and "MP3Sparks.com" that has authorization to sell music.

Sorry Curt. Used to be a Napster guy too, waaaay back when it first started. Haven't used it since it closed down. Moved to Kazaa which messed up my puter (again years back).

Now I use Limewire (P2P). Haven't had any problems with it so far. Loads of audio & video files to choose from.

Don't know how well the "legal" implications will sit with you though, should you choose to use it wink

The following was quoted from this page

MP3Sparks is licensed by the Federation for Collective Copyright Management of Works Used Interactively (NP-FAIR), unlike AllOfMP3 which was licensed by the Russian Organization for Multimedia and Digital Systems (ROMS).

Does that make "MP3Sparks.com" legally authorized to sell music?.

Curt - I know you said no monthly fees, but I find emusic.com to be very reasonable.

emusic.com is reasonable “IF” you download 30+ songs a month. I do not download that much. My download parameters are more like 1-3 per month and “sometimes” 6-10 per month on an especially busy month of downloading songs.

Monthly membership fee based services suck for me because I would end up spending $3-$10 per song at the rate I download. I believe itunes has that garbage DRM thing and special format going on forcing people to use their itunes software and iPod. That causes problems when wishing to use generic mp3 players or usb flash drives to play directly through stereos. I hate Apple for doing that crap.

hahaha yeah, that didn't last long. I also thought the internet was going to make things easier. It's getting harder to get what you want. Stupid greedy vultures!!!

So far AllofMp3.com and the clone site as well as other similar services in the Russian territory are much more flexible. I just need to find a reliable legal service with flexibility and good prices. Memberships do not work for me.

formerskeptic, isn't limewire software one of those software programs that at one time was packaged with thiefware? I did go to their web site which says it contains no spyware and adware, which is good if true.

Also, with P2P networking, doesn't that pose a computer security risk because that would make your computer sorta act like an FTP server for other computers? Can other people use Limewire to upload malicious software to your computer and run it?

As far as legality issues, downloading other people's mp3's would seem to be pretty much illegal as far as copyrights go.

I use my full allocation of 75 per songs per month at emusic so it suits me.

I sometimes download individual tracks from juno.co.uk if I can't find it on emusic. Might be worth a look.

Whilst we're at it, have you heard of Shazam? I know it works in England an the USA is to follow soon. Anyway, if you hear a song yo like on the radio or in a club - whatever - and you want to know what it is, dial 2480 on your phone and hold it up. Shazam will work out what it is and text you back.

    Marvellous.

Thanks everyone for your input, appreciated smile

Still looking for a permanent solution.

    Hampstead, cool ==> Shazam.

That sounds similar to something iPhone does with identifying songs, but I'm not going to get locked into another “Bill Gates Like” piece of equipment that seeks to control the user with DRM crap.

Guess what I'm asking for is a tall order since no one seems to know of a source like what I've asked about. Oh well, thanks anyway to all who responded. Still looking...
