I am fairly new to log-reading, so I'm going to ask newbie questions.
My webhotel includes Webalizer, but I read raw data too - I'm on a quest to minimize hotlinking to my images.

I sometimes see this in my log:
200 4280 "-" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1)"

Usually, instead of the -, there's the url of the requestor, so how is it possible to get just the - ?

Below the many lines of similar requests is this:
272 "-" "Googlebot/2.1 (+http://www.googlebot.com/bot.html)"

So would all the previous ones be Gogolebot too?

Well, if thats where the referrer information usually is (e.g. the link to your site was on www.google.com), then it will be blank if they did not get to your site from a link (mainly type it in the address bar directly or from a bookmark); another possibility is they are using some internet security program that will block their referrer information as a 'privacy' step.

If your server runs Apache, you may want to give this a read:

Blocking External Linking and Image Theft with mod_rewrite ; should solve your problems with people linking to your images.
