I am using CPC ads from Google AdWords and textads.com and would like to be able to track them better. I use AW Stats to look at my logs right now. Should I be using a tracking URL such as a string to the end of the address? I have looked at the clicktracks.com site, and that looks the most like what I want. Anyone have experience with this software, or could suggest a better one, and as always the cheaper the better.

Tracking URL's are the way to go if you would like to get details on the performance for your ad's. The more detail you can get in there the better, so you might want to ad multiple variables to your URL string. Example:
http://www.domain.com/?site=google&campaign=adgroup1
This will allow you track how many visiitors and sales you get from each adgroup, which should be all the info you need.
I have been using ClickTracks for a few months and it is really great because it is made specificly for tasks just like this, Any log file analyzer that will allow you to filter your logs by url parameter should allow you to get the info you need. 123LogAnalyzer might be something you could look into, it is an affordable alternative. While the reports and details it gives won't be as good as ClickTracks, it should give you the base information you need.

I would look into third-party ad tracking tools which can be used for this purpose as well. Atlas DMT & Doubleclick are both industry standards in online media, and have a VERY strong foothold in the CPC search ad market as well. Many campaign management softwares are integrating with these tools. In fact, the popular bid/campaign management tool GoToast is actually owned by Atlas!
