Would anyone be so kind as to let me know what program you use for analyzing your logs? I am going to write some articles, and would like to have the examples I give be relevant to the software that everyone is using. Thanks!

The only ones I have come to trust are web trends, Deepmetrix, and urchin. In that order. They all have very good unique visitor tracking based on IPs, tracking gifs, and cookies.

I think it's getting better all the time.

I've never heard of Deepmetrix so will have to have a look.

I use many log analysis programs, depending on the need.

As an ISP, we run Webtrends Log Analyzer for the basic hosting.
As an SEO company, we are moving our marketing clients to NetTracker for an advanced hosting/analysis solution. In addition, for marketing clients, we typically use a combination of NetTracker and ClickTracks.

There are a lot of smaller, faster programs out there, but to get one to do everything is fairly difficult. Besides, I've found that multiple views of the log are a good thing. Each program can show you a different aspect depending on the philosophy of the person that created the program.

'Course, there is always reading the raw log data - that's always fun wink

I use deepmetrix a lot with clients sites at work, and on the whole am not to wild about it. My main issue is it doesn't seem to handle large web logs that well, but that very well could be a problem with our servers or something (i would guess 30% of the times I click on a tab in deepmetrix, my browser crashes and I have to start from the beginning). It gives great overviews, but does not seem to have a lot of options get detailed.

Speaking of Awstats....

Does anyone know where I can find a 'how to' on Awstats? It's supplied with my hosting and i like it, it's just that I don't understand what some of the results mean and I'm new to this.

Any help would be appreciated!

Funnel Web is the one that have found to be most reliable and it is freeware to boot. I have used AWStats in the past as well as Webtrends.

Depending on the situation, we've used a variety of them...
We've found that ClickTracks can be an AWESOME tool when used in conjunction with other analytic softwares. It's not a WebTrends replacement, but they have some amazing data that can't be found in any other analytic solution...

I agree, clicktracks is great but it does lack some of the basic statistics that you will find in other log analyzers.
