    Hi All,
We are conducting a survey and we want to find out what Web Masters/Web Developers/Designers prefer to use for their hosting. Do they prefer Windows Hosting or Linux Hosting?

What if the Web pages are designed in HTML and you find a Windows and a Linux Host offering their services for the same price (considering the competition in the hosting industry these days). Which one will you choose?

    Please share your views.

    Cheers
    Dan

oh forum spamming... can't you guys do that somewhere else please? For anyone else reading this though, freeBSD is great, my first choice by far. Then Linux if I have to. Windows... ha haha

Well, since Apache powers about 70% of the web, you don't need opinion - you just need to look at the real world statistics.

Administering a Windows server is as easy as clicking the mouse whilst administering the *nix servers require more detailed experience.

Apache servers are incredibly powerful and you can compile a server exactly for the requirement. You have a very wide range of modules with enormous capability for free - like the mod_rewrite. Windows servers require expensive commercial add-ons.

If only making it actually secure were this easy though.

Last I read, IIS 7 or is it 8? has been completely rewritten, surprise surprise, it's been made 'modular' with 'text configuration files'. Sound familiar? Should, it's becoming apache, LOL..

Last time I tried to setup IIS, I think it was 6, creating an actually secure install [the default install was radically insecure by design, so that admins could with a 'few mouseclicks' get it up and running]. Newer IISes have finally admitted that this cannot be done, it's improving. But of course this is at the cost of that beloved point and click ease of use, ease of use translating to insecure server.

Was on a windows server (windowsNT) back in 1999. File permissions were a PITB from a site owner's maintenance point of view. Moved to a Linux server and never looked back. I'm happier with Linux.
