I build all my sites using CSE HTML Validator, and it is still my preferred tool. However it does not do search+replace across several files in a folder (i.e. change an element on every page of the website).

I tried several search & replace freeware programs and none of them passed the test. I found them all unreliable, unable to recognize a longer portion of a document, and not doing the replacing properly.

I tried the search & replace function of my CuteFTP, and I have the same reliability problems with it.

I now have an evaluation version of Homesite and that program does the job (almost) perfectly. I am a bit reluctant to buy it, though, as the search & replace function is the only one that I am likely to use.

Any other ideas, or should I buy Homesite?

I use Homesite almost exclusively and I would not be able to function without it. It is well worth the money. The extended search and replace functions let me work site wide without the usual problems associated with such functions, though I do advise some care in the use of these functions as the results cannot be undone (though I'm sure you are already aware of this).

Almost any 'good' text editor can do the search and replace across all the open files. But most will not replace anything more than a line of sentence.

Try Editplus for starters. Textpad is another powerful text editor. Both the abovementioned software has many powerful features:

Search for a particular string using Regularexpression, remove duplicate lines and work with a host of many programming languages - Perl,HTML and PHP to name a few.

Edit plus is one of the few multiple line search and replace programs I know of, dreamweaver also supports this, with some bugs.

However, in editplus the files have to be open, and there's an upper limit as to how many you can work on at once, memory issues, crashes, but it works completely flawlessly, I've used mine for years with no issues, you get spoiled...

Between dreamweaver and edit plus I've never really come across an issue that couldn't be easily dealt with in terms of search and replace, dreamweaver is good because you can setup sites then search through those sites without opening files, that's very useful, more for single line/item type searches though.

That's the only thing that makes me ever open dreamweaver to be honest, it's all I use it for, literally, site/folder/subfolder search and replace, it works really well, except for putting in the wrong line breaks, maybe that's fixed in mx/2004, don't know.

Thanks! I see the costs and advantages / limitations of each program:

Editplus $30 - but "the files have to be open, and there's an upper limit as to how many you can work on at once, memory issues, crashes". Last patch 9 March 2005.

Textpad $31 - interesting that their homepage mentions "TextPad integrates with CSE HTML Validator" and that they seem to have "WildEdit® 1.1 - an interactive tool for power users to make the same changes to a set of text files in a folder hierarchy." - maybe I should experiment with it... Last updated 19 June 2004.

Homesite $99 - seems to do the search & replace job perfectly, although I find it a bit expensive if used only for that purpose. I wanted to try its HTML validation effectiveness (on my evaluation version), but all what I got is a message "Unable to locate the validator executable. You may need to re-install it." Last updated 8 September 2003?

Dreamweaver $399 - too expensive and too complex for my needs

So, I will keep experimenting with Homesite and Textpad...

Don't worry about the updates, they don't matter, Editplus was done in 2000, that's when my version was made, some programs are just very well written, all the features work. The amthor may or may not release a new version, he says he's going to.

The validator for homesite is probably something you have to install, like html tidy.

You don't have to pay $399 to get that dreamweaver functionality unless you really like throwing money away, look for a used copy of mx, shouldn't be hard to find. Getting the latest dreamweaver is a waste of money, I've never upgraded from 4.0, just can't see any reason to since that search and replace / site management feature is the only part of it I use.
