I am not MAC savvy, however the only computer we have in our home is a MAC and I recently purchased a domain that uses Windows for the 'create a website template' software. So I downloaded a free template and now I have a folder with a bunch of files on my desktop and I have no idea how to edit the information. Could someone please help me with a step by step? I would really appreciate it.

You are going to need some software to build your site - have a look at Dreamweaver, it's the industry standard these days.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by that. Templates generally consist of html files (which are merely text files) and some graphic files in the form of gifs or jpegs. You can open the html files in any text editor, but the task of sorting thru all the markup code can be a bit daunting, especially if you're new to all this. I recommend you try a WYSIWYG ( "what you see is what you get" ) editing program.
Like philh said, Macromedia's Dreamweaver is pretty much the industry standard these days. But at $399 list, it may be out of your range. I use Adobe GoLive, but it is also $399. Both will let you download a 30-day trial version, I believe. Both are very capable "high end" programs and have a bit of a learning curve.
I'm sure there are some free or shareware programs out there that would meet your needs. Found this one on a quick search: Nvu that is "open source" (meaning it's completely free). The Mac version says it requires OS X 10.1.5 or newer.
The Mozilla Suite is another open source program available for Mac that has an html editor. I've used Mozilla's Thunderbird and Firefox, they're pretty straightforward.

I use Mozilla and have used the "composer" (html editor) and it's good (personally I code pages manually using wordpad LOL - as I want to learn how to do it), but if you don't understand how web pages are made it'll be impossible for you no matter how good the software. Mozilla is free, start with that - open your .html file and see if you can edit it. Use google to learn html, worked for me so far. Good luck.

Do yourself a big favor and download a real text editor, there's a really nice free one called crimson editor
Syntax highlighting, indentation, etc etc, once you try one of these you'll never go back to any MS product

For editing html wordpad works fine, but I will look into that one though. I like simple things. If I want fancy I could use "composer" I'm old, excuse me. Thanks.

crimson editor and edit plus, it's commercial pay version, are both very simple, tiny applications, they just work better. Plus wordpad can insert invisible characters into your scripts if you're unlucky.
I can't even conceive of trying to work without auto indenting and syntax highlighting, what a headache.

If you save in TEXT mode wordpad doesn't insert junk, hasn't so far anyway. I agree there are better, but my website is very simple. The only reason I even have it was to learn html, which I have done and continue to do. I have just learned how to get rid of my IFRAME and use a scrolling TABLE instead, I just need to recode about a dozen pages  but the SEs will work better. Anyhow, very off topic, sorry

that's what I used to think too until I had a file somebody had worked a little on then saved with notepad, crashed the script, when I opened it in a real text editor I saw some weird proprietary MS character inserted right before the <?php of the script, invisible in notepad.
But that's not the reason to use a decent text editor, it's just having a nice small tool that will do the job better in every way than notepad or wordpad, there is nothing that those two do that equals what any decent text editor does, and things like crimson editor are tiny applications, I think smaller than wordpad, but they are just a better way to work with code, syntax highlighting makes all code 10 times easier to work with, and it's automatic, just happens when you open the document.
