Hi, has anybody used 1and1.com to host their site. Am thinking of using them to host a store i'm building. Any good, bad experiences.
Thanks, Country Joe

I used to use them. They are ok, but when you want to unsubscribe, they are a pain in the ****! I ended up getting an extra years charge with them with no way out of it, however, when I was using them I didnt have any problems.

Spotted this thread late...I signed for a '3 yrs free' account when they first launched just out of curiosty.

The control panel is awful, and very slow, and a few people I know signed up later so they could get Front Page for free as per another offer they did. They're still waiting. One was told it could be next year.

No idea how fast they deliver pages as I never put a site on there.

Hi

Just a word of warning to those of you who may wish to sign-up to 1&1. If you visit ((URL REMOVED)), you will be able to read 100's of postings on various blogs about 1&1's quality of service. Needless to say they are all bad!

Caveat Emptor! Buyer Beware! huh

Find out exactly what you are letting yourself in for by visiting this website - and do not say you were not warned!

Hi

I'm the owner of url removed (formerly url removed).

People are not just coming forward to complain about 1&1 just for the 'fun of it'. There are numerous serious issues to be addressed for which 1&1 remain silent.

I was commenting to the owner of [url removed] the other day that being a customer of 1&1 is like living in a prison camp. A bit extreme perhaps, but bear with me ...

Imagine two prisoners of war (POWs) chatting to each other. One says: "The food here is great, we are treated well and everything is quite cosy". The second POW says: "Yes, but have you ever tried to leave?"

I refer specifically (of course) to 1&1's contract cancellation facility, amongst other issues. 1&1 may be cheap, but you get what you pay for. If you keep your mouth shut and don't complain, you are OK. But God forbid you do open your mouth and say something 1&1 doesn't like! Then the 'prison guards' will take away your privileges and stick you in 'solitary confinement'.

Try to leave and you have to get over obstacles seemingly designed to make life difficult for you.

Ergo, 1&1 wants you as a compliant, non-complaining customer. Outside of that, watch out!

Anyone want to join my escape committee??? A tunnel is being dug at: [url removed]!

JimBot Edit: Link dropping is not allowed here. This is the second time your posts have been edited for that. A third time and your posting privileges will be removed.

It is worth noting that 1and1 actually host your site in Germany, so unless you have a .co.uk domain, you will not be found on Google UK by users searching for UK sites.

yup.... another horror story on 1&1 here. They are holding two of my domain names hostage. They seem to do this to a lot of customers.

I had recourse to phone their technical support for a friend a few months ago - call centre in Philippines, and took ages to even be understood. Not funny.

1and1 shut down 173 of my domains , locked me out of my account and told the Better Business Bureau that I canceled
my account . Does this sound like a prefabricated story ?
Well it is, the part that is prefabricated is 1and1 saying I canceled my account, they made that up. I had requested by Fax that when all my domains expire in my contracts , I do not want them renewed , and at that time I want my account canceled and not before. My problems started when 1and1 wanted to invoice me take me to collection for a service which I cancelled in the first 24 hours. They said the 90 day money back guarantee did not apply to me as I was under a 1 year contract. They did not mention the 100 percent satisfaction guarantee. The Federal Trade Commission helped me out of that mess, but a couple of days latters I was 173 domains short. I have on going complaints filed which are still pending.
My advice is read the 1and1 T&C (terms of contract) and
take the fine print seriously. You waive your rights to trial by jury, to class action lawsuits and to all sorts
of stuff including your clams 2.1.7(like in Oysters)
Search "1and1 customer support" at Yahoo and at Google
and be well informed. I found many Disgruntled 1an1 clients like myself and nothing surprises me when I hear about horror stories. The BBB lists 1and1 as having an unsatisfactory record. That at least is one red flag in a good location!

I am currently with 1and1 and am looking for a new host so I can leave after 3 years.

They've been okay, but never upgrade existing subscribers. I just got told that their latest improvements are only for new clients. Not good. Their webmail is out of the dark ages and I've finally had it. I'm paying over $40 a month for almost nothing (I've had to insert all kinds of widgets to get basic functionality - bad bad bad).
