I sell toys on my website and do a decent business. Recently, I approached someone who is very creative about a new design for our site and she is big on flash. Some of the stuff looks cool but some of her ideas would frustrated the average user who just wants to get to the product and not deal with a bunch of pizaz. Secondly, I fear that flash is really bad for SEO as it can hide great searchable content. Should I steer clear entirely? She tells me it has nothing to do with SEO but I know she is wrong.

Thanks,

Tom

Flash is not search engine friendly at all, so if you have to use a flash site you also normally would have an HTML site running alongside it for SEO purposes.
Flash is also incredibly dated now in terms of 'fashionable' websites.

Ditch the flash if you dont like the idea of her using it. Also, if you're selling products then quick easy navigation and ease of use is the winner.. not fancy graphics. An overly complicated or fancy site can cut sales dramatically.

freeflyer...thanks for reinforcing my thoughts. It looks gimmicky and really just frustrates me more than anything when I see it. Is XML the way to go?

well xml is really just a feed system, do you mean ajax?

Anyway, in general on ecommerce sites go for...

Simplicity
uncluttered
minimal page clicks to get to a product
streamlined purchasing system

and you wont go far wrong.. try to advoid too many infoboxes as well.
