Is internal linking still a good idea ? I mean to use the key words hyperlinked pointing to the main page or the topical page ? I have a new site my my body text is not hyperlinked to point to a key word or to a main page. I know it used to highly advisable. Thanks in advance.

Internal links do not make make a huge difference to anything; but they are essential for visitors to get around the site. And spiders need to travel too
Best to devise a logical, user friendly system that works and doesn't confuse people. Or spiders.

Anchor text is relatively important still. As ever, don't overdo it.
Make the links useful for visitors, and search engines will follow.
