OK - i'm by no means a SEM expert, but know enough to know that number of backlinks is a fairly important statistic as far as Google is concerned. It seems that the way to search for the number of backlinks produces wildly inconsistent (an many times inaccurate if you ask me) results. I'm using the:

    link:www.domain.com

format to search for backlinks. It seems that for several sites I work with the number of backlinks is extremely low or non-existant when I know that can't be. In fact on a few occasions, I've confirmed several pages that I know DO link to me and found them in Google's index. There is the page, plain as day and there is the link to me (again, plain as day), but Google still says it has no backlinks. How can this be? Anyone else experienced this inconsistency.

There is one site in particular that I work with that has several thousand pages from its own site in the index, fairly popular site in terms of overall traffic, good user community yet when I do a backlink check for it - Google shows 0. That simply can't be. Other search engines show hundreds if not thousands of backlinks and Google shows 0. Is there a blacklist problem I should be concerned about?

    Thanks from a rookie poster.

Greetings klentz and welcome to the forum!! Sounds like you are on the right track as the first step is check to see if the page with the link is within the search engines index.

found them in Google's index. There is the page, plain as day and there is the link to me (again, plain as day), but Google still says it has no backlinks. How can this be? Anyone else experienced this inconsistency.

This is actual par for the course with google. As long as I can remember google has not shown 'all but instead some' backlinks when a backlink search is completed. They basically 'filter' out some results. Traditionally, the primary factor for this filter was that if a site had a PageRank of 3 or lower then it would not show as a backlink search. To confuse things a little, there has recently been changes that it is not such a clear line as a PageRank 3 or lower ... but they still 'filter' out some backlinks consistently.

when I do a backlink check for it - Google shows 0. That simply can't be. Other search engines show hundreds if not thousands of backlinks and Google shows 0. Is there a blacklist problem I should be concerned about?

Typically there should not be a discrepancy from 0 to hundreds/thousands in other search engines. I'm curious how many yahoo shows specifically as that is a fair gauge for 'some' comparison. With your situation the first thing I would check is my log files or web stats to see if I am receiving any visitor referrals from google. Basically, are people searching google and able to get to your site by non paid keyword searches. This can tell you a lot as to if your site is there and available naturally... or if it is being 'supressed' in the rankings via some sort of filter/penalty (along the lines of the blacklist you suggest - but instead of it being a manual list google typically chooses to 'blacklist' seo tactics based on the algorithm for all versus a one by one situation).

hope that helps for getting started at getting a grasp of your scenarios.

The thing I think is weird is how many old guestbook links are showing up again.

    Ken,

Try this search at Google: .yourdomain. -site:yourdomain.com

This usually works really well for domain names that are unique eg "thinkspark". It doesn't work well for names that are not unique eg "cars" (where there is likely to be cars.com, cars.ca, cars.com.au, cars.co.uk and so on).

I tested it for the site in your profile and Google shows 1040 backlinks. I didn't check them to see whether all of them did, in fact, link to your site (i.e. "thinkspark" may not be totally unique - if so, then some of the links listed will be for the other site(s) that also have the term in their domain name eg. yourdomain.com.au [when yours is yourdomain.com])

    Hope this helps smile

Thanks for your help - good suggestions. In case anyone finds this helpful, below is a response from Google about their link: search:

... We understand your concern about the Google link search results for your site. Our link search does not currently return a comprehensive set of results. The results show a sample of the links that point to your page, but this list is in no way indicative of the link structure utilized by Google to formulate a page's PageRank.

To obtain a more comprehensive list of the links that point to your page, perform a Google search on your URL. From the results page, select the 'Find web pages that contain the term' link, and Google will provide you with a list of webpages that mention your address...

One other question... that search function you suggest above seems to work well, but am I correct in saying that it will only reveal links that actually use the domain name in (or around) the linktext?
