I really want to make a directory specifically for women ( nothing against men lol ) I love to review and research sites and I love providing a place to find good links to specific subject areas.
I am just soooooooooooo scared to do this !
won't domz and such super directories chew me up and spit me out? I love them ( really I do ! ) but I also "fear" them as far as my idea making it.
The directory would list GOOD links about fashion, beauty, health issues, relationship issue, parenting, marriage, recipes, crafts, and anything else that pertains to women.
Please give me your opinion.

I think you should go for it! Check out www.gossamer-threads.com/scripts/index.htm - it's a program that will allow you to build a database of links using MySQL. It takes a while (a couple weeks) to learn how to administer this program. But once you do, it's a lot of fun.

Or you could use this free directory script. PHP/MYSQL and already with mod-rewrite.

Regarding your concerns on big directories:
While it is most likely that you will never grow as big as one of the main directories out there, a niche directory may still have a purpose. With a small topic, you can focus much better on that topic.
And anyway: Never try to compete with something existing, always try to do what you want to do as good as you can, and if enough people think along the same lines, it may become a success.

Don't fear it - do it.
Your fear might actually be a sign that you have come across a worthwhile niche.
Be ready to invest heavily in time - be ready, also, to walk away if it doesn't pan out.
If you have the time, run with it.
Things like this , IMO, are just the sort of thing the internet is about. Filling niche spaces is pretty much what's left.
...anyone want a directory about English Springer Spaniels?

I would do it as well, niche directories are a very good way to attract new visitors on your website. Probably a good way to sell specific items for woman as well
