I would like to ask you something. Do you think that a very good developer can develop site of Friendster type, but only for capacity 1 mio users within 2 months? How much time do you think that king of site need to be developed?
Concept, mock ups, text and design would be prepared before he start.
It seems very easy site. Where can be doubts and problems?

using a cms system with stock components, a couple of weeks
includes
picture gallery
video
mp3's
blogs
forums/message boards
articles
chat utility
pms/email reader
newsletters
user profile
each user can make webpages
group page
guestbook
members log in
and more
there are even advertising modules too place your google adwords all over the site
look at drupal or joomla and there are others.
you can create your own look and feel from modification of css and html files for the template you pick
if you want to customize, that will take some time and a developer, but all the stock components integrate at the click of a button and work well.
