That is easy:
[link] will give you Apache,Mysql and PHP in one complete package. So will the following:
[link]
[link]
[link]
[link]

or go directly to Apache - [link]
You will get only the HTTP server.

easier for a novice, use XAMPP from apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html

do not use on a production server, works great for testing

It is a pig to set up using Vista, but works well on everything else from Windows 98 to Windows XP inclusive.

Is that by design from Microsoft? Or an Apache compatibility problem?

It is all to do with the extra security built in to Vista.

It stops you from installing stuff, editing configuration files and so on. You can't get the Apache monitor to run at all.

g1smd, what stuff are you referring to when you say “It stops you from installing stuff”?

Do you mean that it stops people from editing configuration files for the apache server such as “httpd.conf”?

You got to be kidding! That's a load of crap! It almost seems that Microsoft is deliberately attempting to frustrate people from using Apache server for test purposes on Windows machines. I'm sure MS does not want people to use Apache and made no attempt to ensure that apache would work locally. I'd be willing to bet that they are glad that the new security measures frustrate people away from testing apache servers on local machines.

It would also seem that these security measures have nothing to do with real security. After all, what sense would it serve to stop people from using apache? It's not like the general user is going to use apache themselves and potentially open up their computers to security problems. Only developers would have that problem, but the developers in general likely have security measures in place to prevent outsiders from accessing their computers. I have ZoneAlarm stop any outgoing traffic from my own local copy of apache.

It almost seems like the security on vista is more about protecting vista's market share than actually protecting people = security for MS's market share, not security for real people.

Linux, welcome to my desktop. <Curt kicks MS vista's butt out the door>

MS really seems to enjoy alienating users.

You can't edit httpd.conf unless you first open the text editor as an Administrator. So no right click the filename and edit directly anymore.

Yes, the Apache Monitor does not run at all. Just installing the program and getting anything basic to start working was a major feat.

I also battled for ages to just find, and then actually edit, the HOSTS file for some extra entries too.

>> Linux, welcome to my desktop.

er.. Don't be too sure. I have a Home linux box running RedHat 9 from 2003 almost with very little problem until a couple of weeks ago. I knew long ago that the 2.4 Kernel on Redhat 9 had a vulnerability. But I had spent considerable time to build a dedicated kernel for the low end machine and I decided to follow the policy - "if it aint broken, don't fix it".

Log files showed a massive hit from almost all over the world at the SSH port using brute force. They all seemed to be eager to gain a normal user and use the kernel vulnerability to upgrade it to root access. Not that the firewall would allow them - still they kept coming.

In this case the machine was well locked in. But I am not sure if all such linux distros are so well locked in.

The bottom line is even in linux, upgrade to the recent version. Constant vigil is essential no matter how secure you think your OS is.
