Hello everyone. I've been contemplating for a while when was the best time to sell my pride and joy pride of the past year and half, and I've finally decided the time is now.
Important: This is a very detailed post. I wanted to answer any possible questions I thought might arise, and address just about anything you could be thinking of. Please read the entire thing, and serious offers only.
Why Sell?
First and foremost, the initial question many people ask themselves is "why is this person" selling a site if it is doing quite well and making them money. I am a high school student, who will be entering my final year in September, and then getting ready for college. Initially, I had planned to hold onto the site until almost the end of the school year (April or May of 2008), but I decided it would be best to focus on my school work and freelance work (my portfolio has fallen extremely out of date). I am not selling the site for any other reason beside the fact that I need to focus my time and effort into other things.
The Site
The site being sold is Devlounge (http://www.devlounge.net). Currently a PR6, the site was established and launched in April 2006. Throughout that time, I redesigned it 4 times, with the most recent redesign launching just this past June. It has and still is powered by Wordpress, currently the newest version in the 2.2 branch. Statistics have been kept with a valid Mint license (http://www.haveamint.com) since shortly after launch.
The site is a a resource for inspiring and professional designers, developers, entrepreneurs, and just about anyone in between. We have over 342 posts and 1,761 comments, contained within 20 categories. Each week I since last fall I have published "Friday Focus", a weekly run down of what was hot in design, digg, and other outlets. We also have interviews with the Digg staff team, Larissa Meek, Matt Brett, Ryan Sims, Jonathan Snook, and Steve Smith, just to name a few.
The Staff
The staff team is currently rather small, but I was just beginning to get in touch with some new people about possibly becoming guest contributors for a small fee or $75-$100 a month. Currently, our regular authors contribute for free, and as frequently as they can. Larissa Meek (former interviewee) is also scheduled to join the team in August, and she may have contributed her first piece by the time this auction ends.
I myself plan on staying on the team, as long as the new owner will allow it, and writing as frequently as I can. I would also be fine with staying around in a "project manager" type role to assist the new owner in managing the staff, articles, etc.
Visitor Statistics
I have attached screenshots of our visitor statistics, including feed subscribers for your benefit. Please right click on the image title and open in a new tab to see the full sized screenshot.
The Package
Purchasing Devlounge will entitle you to instant ownership of the entire site. All earnings from the time you take over will go directly to you. You will receive:
- The current Devlounge design
- All articles (And Full Ownership over ones I've published)
- Domain, which will be registered for an additional 10 years before being transfered to you.
- Full rights (Only thing I ask if that you respect the hard work our authors put into their articles. Please do not resell them or claim ownership of their articles)
- Hosting. Current I am hosted with Wiredtree on my friends VPS, with 15 Gigs of Space and 40 Gigs of bandwidth. You will get one month free, and then you will have to find a new host.
Revenue
Throughout the past year and a half, I have sold ads in the form of banner and text ads. I have never fully monetized like I may have been able to (for example, Adsense, lots of Text Link Ads, etc), and I believe my banner prices have been fairly under priced (many times I give first time advertisers slight breaks, or nice price reductions is they purchase ads for extended blocks). Because I am a student, much of them money was coming in and going right back out, making it difficult to put an exact value on revenue earned from Devlounge. I have broken apart my Paypal history to come up with an average amount of revenue earned. Keep in mind I also have a partnership with Jobs and Gigs (http://www.jobsandgigs.com) that was recently established after having a previous partnership with Krop (http://www.krop.com). * Please note: This partnership may now be changing to Authenticjobs after recently speaking with Cameron Moll.
The total income earned in the past 15 months through the site is $3,959, which averages out to $263/month. Keeping in mind that throughout the first few months when traffic was low, we sold few ads, if none at all. Please see the XLS file for verification. (Please note: Additional information such as email addresses of payees have been removed from the XLS file)
Bids
Please post your bids below. This is my first time selling a fully scale, established site, but I have an idea of what I'd like to make and what the site is worth. Dnscoop values it at $55,000, but I realize that may be a bit too high. Still, I am looking for my best offer. Considering what you get, the revenue opportunities that are available (and have not been even closely taken advantage of), and the fact that I will also remain on the staff team and help you manage the site, i expect all bidders will offer a fair and accurate bid based on their own assessment.
Feel free to ask any questions.
Payment methods include Escrow and Check, although you may ask about other options. (I'm located in the U.S.)
PLEASE VISIT THE SITEPOINT AUCTION TO PLACE A BID, SEE SOME COMMON Q&A's I'VE BEEN ASKED, AND ETC. Or email me at hi@astereostudio.com if you are interested! I will not be checking this post most likely, so get in touch or use SP! Thanks!
